1973

Arab members of OPEC announce an oil embargo in response to US support for Israel during Yom Kippur war. The embargo prompts brownouts in the US, long waits for gasoline for cars and a dramatic spike in oil prices.

1979

The Islamic Revolution in Iran prompts a renewed spike in oil prices, with barrel prices rising over $20.

1989

The Exxon Valdez spills millions of gallons of oil off the coast of Alaska. The spill has a devastating environmental impact.

1990

Oil Prices reach $40 a barrel ahead of the first Gulf War.

2008

In January, oil prices briefly touch the psychological marker of $100 a barrel amid violence in Nigeria, tension between the US and Venezula and a jittery stock market.

In July continued tensions in Nigeria and Iran, along with a weakened dollar push the price of oil to $147.27 a barrel in New York trading - an all-time high.

In December, the price of oil plummets to $32 a barrel as the global economic slowdown hits.
